A new report from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) found that Bitcoin mining is responsible for about 0.10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the report, this figure is equivalent to 48.35 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. The institute also estimates that 37.6 percent of the energy used by the industry comes from sustainable sources, according to data released on Tuesday.
The numbers are based on the geographic distribution of Bitcoin mining in January. CCAF took its latest data and combined it with public information on how electricity is generated in different regions.
