NFT artist Pplpleasr launched its first Solana-based project this week.
“The Collectoooooor” allows NFT owners to exchange for rarer NFTs. The project has brought about US$127,000 in revenue to charity.
Digital artist Pplpleasr (also known as Emily Yang) is one of the best in the NFT market boom this year. He designed the cover of Fortune magazine and sold it as an NFT. Her previous work was carried out on the popular NFT platform based on Ethereum, but has now expanded to its competitor Solana network and released an innovative project.
During the Solana Breakpoint conference in Lisbon this week, Pplpleasr collaborated with Cloud Eater Studios and the Solana-based Metaplex agreement to create “The Collectoooooor”. The project has a total of 500 works, including 3D ducks, buildings, UFOs, and more.
On its own, any piece of work may look simple or ordinary. However, if a wallet holder collects all 13 unique items in the series, they can finally choose to destroy them in exchange for one of a total of 15 limited-edition animated 3D urban landscapes (three designs, each with Five versions).
Pplpleasr told Decrypt that “The Collectoooooor” was designed as “Like the meta-universe “Animal Crossing”, players collect different assets based on recipes to ‘make items’ as upgrades.”
Nintendo’s “Animal Crossing” game series contains low-key life simulations of cartoon creatures and online social games. The latest version on the Switch was released in March 2020 at the beginning of the new crown pandemic, and it has become a joyful journey for tens of millions of players to escape from isolated reality.
Visually, the urban scene of The Collectoooooor captures the atmosphere of “Animal Crossing”, with an isometric top view with an animated 3D setting. Pplpleasr said that the design inspiration for the project also came from her previous work “A Whale’s Dream” and drew visual cues from the Lisbon and Solana ecosystems.
Launching a project for the first time on Solana is a new experience for Pplpleasr, but she thinks it is a long process. “I am very curious about other blockchains and how NFTs operate on other chains, their market/audience, and the difference between it and Ethereum.” In addition, Solana Labs COO Raj Gokal is a long-term supporter. In early 2021, Pplpleasr was invited to cooperate for the first time.
In addition to turning to Solana to launch projects, Pplpleasr also uses a different approach to sell “The Collectoooooor” NFT. Pplpleasr uses the Fair Launch Protocol (Fair Launch Protocol), which is designed to prevent a large number of buyers from flooding in to purchase a limited number of NFTs at the same time, while also allowing the community to determine prices in a decentralized manner.
This process first allows potential buyers to bid on a single NFT at a price they deem reasonable, and then finally sets the median bid as the “fair start” price. In this case, as of Wednesday’s release, its “fair start” price was 1 SOL, or about $240.
Any bidder who invested 1 SOL or higher will automatically receive a lottery ticket, and then 500 winners will be selected to complete the transaction. Bidders who have not won the lottery will receive an automatic refund, while bidders who bid more than 1 SOL will receive a refund of the remaining part. Those with lower bids can also choose to participate in the sweepstakes at a higher price.
However, regardless of the result, each bidder also paid a fee of 0.1 SOL, which will be used for charity. As of press time, there are 5568 bidders, with a total cost of 556.8 SOL, or approximately US$127,000. Pplpleasr has asked fans in the Discord group of the Collectoooooor community to help figure out the best way to donate funds.
Previously, as a result of the sale of “Fortune” NFT, she donated more than 650,000 US dollars worth of ETH to charities focused on safeguarding freedom of speech. That auction generated a total of more than 1.3 million U.S. dollars worth of ETH, and she and Fortune donated half of the proceeds to four selected organizations.
Solana’s NFT ecosystem began to flourish at the end of this summer, and its platform provides an alternative to Ethereum with low fees and fast transaction times. In the past three months, popular avatar collections such as Degenerate Ape Academy and Solana Monkey Business have helped drive hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions on the Solana network.
Pplpleasr is one of the most well-known artists in the NFT field. Earlier this year, her works for the DeFi protocol were very popular during the NFT market boom at the beginning of the year. The video advertisement she produced for the decentralized exchange Uniswap was sold as an NFT in March and was sold in ETH worth $525,000. The NFT was purchased by PleasrDAO, a group of fans, with the purpose of collecting her works, as well as other NFTs and unique cultural artworks.
In addition to the “Fortune” cover and NFT, Pplpleasr recently collaborated with musician Steve Aoki to launch plsa0k1, a cooperative vault for collecting NFT artworks by female artists. Steve Aoki also announced this week that he has collaborated with cartoonist and creator of “Spawn” Todd McFarlane to launch the Solana-based NFT market OddKey.
