On October 30th, CoinDesk published an analysis article “Facebook stole encryption ideas again with its absurd name change.”
The article stated that Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse has little to do with the open and interoperable vision first proposed by the blockchain industry.
Although Facebook’s online virtual reality (VR) will have some form of NFT integration, the broader vision is not proposed by Zuckerberg. The press conference focused on his disappointment with Apple’s App Store and Facebook’s plans to build a competitive parallel walled garden focusing on online VR experiences (CoinDesk author said he did not intend to call it a meta universe).
They will charge a fee to creators who design virtual clothes. Zuckerberg even warned yesterday that fees on the platform will be high for a period of time.
Zuckerberg explained that Facebook will build its online VR business at a loss for a period of time (including subsidizing equipment) to justify its high cost.
The CoinDesk author also mentioned user privacy, monopoly, legal and regulatory issues, and finally concluded that the meta-universe Facebook is building is a digital hell.
